Try Linux before changing your computer

  1. Check the important hardware.
    Look up Linux support for the exact Wi-Fi adapter, graphics chip, fingerprint reader, audio hardware, and dock—not only the laptop model name.
  2. Download only from the official project.
    Avoid third-party ISO mirrors and “preconfigured” images unless the distribution itself links to them.
  3. Test with a live USB or virtual machine.
    A live USB lets you check hardware without installing. A virtual machine is safer for learning and specialist tools, although graphics and device access are more limited.
  4. Back up before dual booting.
    Save irreplaceable files, create recovery media, record disk-encryption recovery keys, and understand the partition plan before resizing or installing.
  5. Install updates, then restore apps and files.
    Use the distribution’s built-in updater and software center before adding outside repositories or scripts.

Which Linux distribution is easiest for a beginner?

Linux Mint is often the most familiar choice for people moving from Windows. Ubuntu is another excellent starting point when broad documentation, vendor support, and long-term-support releases matter most.

Can Linux run Windows programs?

Sometimes. Wine supports many desktop applications, Steam Proton supports many Windows games, and a virtual machine can run licensed Windows software that needs the full operating system. Always check each important app before switching.

Should a beginner install Kali Linux?

Usually no. Kali is a specialized security-testing toolkit for authorized labs and trained users. Learn Linux fundamentals on Mint, Ubuntu, or Fedora first, then use Kali in an isolated virtual machine when you understand the tools and legal boundaries.

Do I have to erase Windows?

No. Start with a live USB or virtual machine. Dual booting is also possible, but it changes disk partitions, so make a tested backup and recovery media first.
